Position: Lead Teacher and Family Advocate
Immediate Supervisor: Education Program Manager
Position Full Time (9.5 Months)
Objective: The lead teacher and Family Advocate is directly responsible for the care and education of children, ensuring that the classroom and educational program meet the mission of CCCC and complies with all program standards, policies, and procedures specific to the program. The lead teacher will also serve as a positive role model to the staff, parents and children and will supervise the planning of a curriculum that is developmentally appropriate for the children enrolled in the program.
The Family Service Advocate is responsible for the implementation of comprehensive and integrated support services (in compliance with Performance Standards) to the Head Start /ECEAP children and families of CCCC. These services include but are not limited to: building relationships with families with respect, identifying family strengths and goals, coordinating services for families, linking families to community resources, supporting parent involvement activities, facilitating parent trainings and developing community partnerships. The family advocate will acknowledge that families have resources in themselves.
Qualifications / Job Preferences: An BS/BA degree with the equivalent of 30 college quarter credits in early childhood education (credits may be included in the degree or in addition to the degree) or a valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in Early Childhood Education (Pre-K-Grade3) or Early Childhood Special Education. Employees may be provisionally hired if they agree to sign a Professional Development Plan describing how the employee will meet qualifications in a 1 year period.
Job Requirements:
1. Be able to follow and carry out duties and responsibilities as described in the CCCC Policies and Procedures Manual, staff handbook, licensing requirements, and other written guides and materials.
2. Be able to keep accurate records, documentation, and organize work effectively.
3. Be able to successfully communicate and work positively with parents, co-workers, and community professionals.
4. Receive a current TB screening and complete a physical examination, which verifies physical constraint job requirements.
5. Fulfill all job training requirements i.e. First Aid / CPR, Blood borne pathogens.
6. Complete 30 hours of STAR’s training within first year of hire or receive an educational exemption.
7. Successfully pass a background check as required by CCCC.
8. Have a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.
Essential functions / major responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Direct Classroom Service:
1. Curriculum:
• Plan and implement developmentally appropriate curriculum, which meet the individual needs of all children with concern for their interests, culture, special needs, individual style and pace of learning.
• Provide a learning environment designed to enhance social, emotional, cognitive, language, creative, and physical/health development of each child.
• Implement a balanced daily schedule that includes opportunities for indoor activities, quiet and active periods, individual, small group or active play and meeting personal needs.
• Conduct screenings, on going assessments and continual observations on children. Maintain progress records of each child’s growth and development and prepare reports and portfolios to be reviewed by parents.
• Provide positive and appropriate child guidance techniques.
2. Environment/Health and Safety:
• Assure classroom sanitation (bleaching tables, clean-up, dusting, sweeping, etc.) are done on a regular basis. This includes maintaining storage rooms, the outdoor play environment and performing regular inspections to assure all equipment and facilities are in good working order.
• Ensure that parent bulletin boards and classroom displays are kept up to date and properly maintained.
• Maintain and track materials/supplies assigned to the classroom.
• Be knowledgeable of health policies that include but are not limited to: medication administration, allergies, first aid kits, emergency/evacuation plan, sanitation/hygiene, etc.
Leadership:
• Serve as a role model and mentor for classroom staff and volunteers.
• Supervise assistant teachers and volunteers.
• Conduct weekly team meetings and planning sessions.
• Promote clear and constant communication between all staff members and program managers.
• Ensure all classroom work is completed in timely manner by following daily, weekly, and monthly teacher responsibilities, and other guidance.
Parent Involvement:
• Ensure effective communication with families through classroom newsletters, lesson plans, phone calls, and classroom contact.
• Conduct parent conferences and home visits according to the scheduled dates.
• Plan and implement regular classroom activities, per schedule. Provide an array of opportunities (during class time and evening hours) for participation.
• Invite parents to become involved in the development of the program’s curriculum.
CCCC Program Support:
• Sustain overall program operations by providing assistance as needed in other classrooms, bus monitoring, kitchen assistance, housekeeping duties, and administrative assistance (perform other duties as assigned).
• Encourage and track classroom parent / community involvement. Obtain federal share hours to ensure program requirements are met.
• Track child attendance and notify the enrollment specialist with concerns.
• Participate in program committees, program wide events and activities and community partnership groups / activities. Must represent CCCC in a professional manner throughout the community.
• Participate in required meetings, trainings, and conferences to maintain current knowledge of early childhood development. Complete 15 hours of professional development trainings per year.
• All employees are expected to work in a professional manner, assuring that all adults and children are treated with mutual respect.
• Assure that all records and information concerning children, staff and families are kept confidential.
Direct Family Services
• Contact families, schedule and conduct home visits following and accomplishing the programs’ outline of objectives for each visit.
• Complete, in partnership with the family, a “Family assessment. Identity interests/needs then complete appropriate referrals and follow up.
• Generate, in partnership with families, a written partnership agreement, which outlines family goals and initiates necessary steps towards obtaining goals.
• Provide individualized, timely follow-up with families (within a month), regarding referrals and progress towards completing and/or setting new goals.
• Obtain knowledge of outside community agencies / resources to share with parents.
• Assess family needs during crisis and provide appropriate intervention.
• Create and maintain confidential files and reports of all activities and services to be staffed monthly with Family Service Manager.
• (Contracted Sites) Regularly have Communication and coordination with teachers regarding parent enrichment activities or other possible concerns.
Incorporating Health
• Assist each family’s linkage to health insurance, a health / dental care provider ensuring access to continuous, accessible care.
• Work with parents to assure each child is up-to-date on a schedule of continuous preventative health care, including an annual physical, dental, and immunization record on file as required by HS/ECEAP and licensing.
• Coordinate and provide recommended health screenings on site, to include: vision, hearing, heights and weights and at some sites, dentals. Assure that parent permission is on file for all health screening performed and parents receive all results.
• Follow-up with families to assure each child receives recommended follow-up/referral care from screenings dental and well-child examinations and immunizations.
• Rescreen hearing and visions within 30 days of 1st screening: when possible, include parent/guardian to ensure successful screenings.
• Enter all health information into database and print monthly tracking reports to ensure compliance deadlines are met.
• Communicate regularly with the Health Manager for all support and health resources, i.e., funding source, providers, education.
• Assist parents in obtaining required program documentation of health records.
• Maintain positive ongoing communication with all health professionals and staff.
Parent Involvement
• Communicate parent involvement opportunities in a timely manner to all families and encourage their full participation, respecting the family’s interests.
• Identify and encourage parents for potential leadership opportunities in Policy Council.
• Work in collaboration with classroom staff to plan and implement classroom parent involvement / training opportunities.
• Assist management staff in the implementation of program wide parent involvement events.
• Provide opportunities for parent education, activities and enrichment based on parent surveys, interviews and evaluations.
• Communicate with Family Service Program Manager regularly for support and guidance.
• Assist to organize and schedule parent education/activities/meetings with approval of Family Service Manager: Place, food, childcare and financing as needed.
